There's lots of video from last weekend's Lollapalooza floating around, even some from the Kidzapalooza stage. And maybe I'll get around to more of it, but for now I just want to share a couple Haley Bonar performances because, well, I think she's the bees' knees. I'm trusting this isn't the last time we'll hear family music from Bonar...

A Quick Guide to Kidzapalooza 2011
The 2011 edition of Lollapalooza kicks off today in Chicago and with it, of course, the Kidzapalooza stage. More details here if you need to know the finer points of the activities going on, but I'm going to focus on the music.
Now, I speak as a) an atypical attendee of C3-produced music festivals, and b) someone who's not been to Lollapalooza, but it's my sense that Kidzapalooza isn't quite as kid-friendly an experience as the Austin Kiddie Limits stage at the Austin City Limits Festival is. Not that it's an unfriendly experience, mind you, just that if I were looking to mostly hang out in the kids' area for 3 afternoons, I get the impression that there would be a lot more families doing the same thing in Austin than in Chicago.
Producer Tor Hyams also brings in a slightly different mix of artists for the Chicago festival than for the Austin festival. One prominent way this is the case is in the number of kids' artists -- not adult performers making music for kids, but tweens and teens making music. There are three such artists doing multiple sets this weekend, and while it's not kindie as it's typically thought of, there are far worse things for your kids than seeing kids just a few years older than they are making loud music sound good. (And you may even enjoy yourself.)
Beyond those artists, Hyams has put together another solid set of folks who've recorded specifically for the pre-tween set and their families. Most of them (like the teen artists) are playing multiple sets this weekend, which gives you the opportunity to dash off with your kids and see some sets you want to see. (Though trying to decide whether you see The Joy Formidable or Titus Andronicus early Sunday afternoon? Tough call.)
But if you're there with your kids this weekend and thinking about heading down to the Kidzapalooza stage to check out the area and an act or two, here's the schedule and some comments about the acts.
Kidzapalooza 2011 Lineup Announced
With Lollapalooza celebrating its 20th anniversary in Chicago this year (August 5-7 in Grant Park), Kidzapalooza celebrated in a very special way:
By releasing its performer lineup before the Austin City Limits/Austin Kiddie Limits announcement for a festival that's usually about 2 months after Lolla.
Some of the lineup had been previously leaked, but the big five are:
Keller Williams
Haley Bonar
Ralph's World
Brady Rymer and the Little Band That Could
Big Bang Boom
In addition to these bands, the lineup also includes the Q Brothers (there every year performing and doing rap/beatbox workshops with the kids), Peter DiStefano and Tor (there every year), and Northbrook Garage, Kate Diaz, and the Happiness Club, all youth performers. (And here's something to think -- it's a nice feather in a cap for an established musician to be able to say they played Lolla, but can you imagine what it's like for a Chicago-area teenager?)
That's a solid lineup right there once again. Anyway, if you want to see the lineup announced by Kidzapalooza co-founder Tor Hyams' kids, here's a YouTube video for ya. Tor's son looks so much like Tor it's scary. Except for the glasses.
The Ketchup Report, Vol. 7
I see a lot of stuff. I don't always have time for a separate post. Here, then, is a collection of random pieces of information -- videos, downloads, news -- that never made it into its own neatly-titled post.
-- Aaron Nigel Smith is offering up a free mp3 of his song "In a Book," a slow reggae jam not featured on his forthcoming Let's Pretend album. Pick it up here.
-- I'd read somewhere -- probably a comment on its Facebook page -- that there was going to be a Kidzapalooza in Chile this year. That struck me as odd, but sure enough, yes, there is. April 2nd and 3rd, while Lollapalooza entertains a whole bunch of folks in Santiago, acts such as Achú, Cuchara, Fractal + Joe Vanconcellos, Los Pulentos, Los Plumabits, and Magictwins will be rocking the Kidza stage (though in the case of the Magictwins, I'm not sure "rock" is the word, even though they rock... magically). Kidzapalooza co-founder Tor Hyams reports he is indeed making the trek down to South America to produce the stage, a trek which makes the cross-country flights folks like Hyams and myself will make for Kindiefest seem like small potatoes.
And, Tor, please see what you can do about bringing Los Plumabits -- featured on a Chilean kids' TV show which seems to be somewhat analagous to Yo Gabba Gabba! -- to the States.

Live Video: "Go Down Emmanuel Road" - Dan Zanes (Live at Lollapalooza/Kidzapalooza)
I tell you, when I was in youth symphony orchestras, not once did I get to play at a major rock festival, strumming my violin. Those Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra kids up there on stage at Lollapalooza with Dan Zanes got all the luck.

Live Video: "Wake Up" - The Verve Pipe (Live at Lollapalooza/Kidzapalooza)
I'd be deficient if I didn't post Lollapalooza video of somebody who actually played a couple full sets at the Kidzapalooza stage last weekend. Here's The Verve Pipe playing in front of a sizable audience (wait for the camera to pan at the end of the clip), opening their set with -- what else? -- "Wake Up" from A Family Album.
