A couple months back, I introduced you to Space Balloons, the kids music side project of Boston musicians Michael J. Epstein and Sophia Cacciola. If you liked the original set of tunes, I think you'll find this new single (and b-side) just as appealing. You've got "Hug War," and then you've got my favorite song title in quite some time, "Hovercraft Full of Eels." Seriously, aren't you just required to download that? Anyway, it's free to download (or stream) via the lovely widget below.
Share: The Littlest Star - Meadows
Last week I told you about The Littlest Star, the first album from Meadows. Meadows is a side project from married (and parental) musicians Keith and Hollie Kenniff. I thought it was a solid album of traditional songs tweaked juuuust enough to make them listenable on repeat, plus a few originals. And I compared them to Elizabeth Mitchell. Positively.
So when Keith asked if I'd be interested in sharing The Littlest Star with you, dear readers, I said, you bet! (Note: I probably didn't actually use the phrase "you bet!," as I don't think I've said that for decades now.) So if you'd like to download the album for free (yes, for free), just click yourself over here and download the zip file. But hurry, as this free download won't be available for very long.
Share: The Baby Grands II - The Baby Grands
Southern kindie rockers The Baby Grands have decided to give away their 2010 album The Baby Grands II (I'll let you figure out where it fits in their discography) for the price of an e-mail address. It's worth the price, but if you're not convinced by my pithy comment, I encourage you to stream the album at their website.
Newborn: The LMNOPs
I guess this is an edition of "Newborn" where I can say I was there "at the birth." Late last year I noted the Kickstarter campaign of the new band The LMNOPs. The Missouri band -- basically the duo of of Zach Reasoner and Todd Gummerman -- successfully completed their Kickstarter campaign, and now you can check out the results on their self-titled debut. We've already noted the zippy "Alphabet Song" as well as "Happy To Be Me" -- in terms of newer tracks, the swirling pop of "Elephant Song" and crunch of "Rolly Polly Roll" are a couple standouts. You can stream the album below or download it at a "pay what you want" price.
I don't know what the future holds for the band, but it's sort of like seeing a baby take tentative steps for the first time, I suppose.
Share: "I'm a Vampire" - Roy Handy & the Moonshot
You know how last year, it was pretty clear even in summer that Justin Roberts' "Trick or Treat" would be the Halloween song of 2010?
This year, I've got a really good feeling about Roy Handy and the Moonshot's new song, "I'm a Vampire." It's catchy, it's funny, and is, well, seasonally appropriate. And, no, it has nothing to do with True Blood or Twilight or any of those things. It's just got an excellent Old '97s-like riff.
Hopefully by the time October rolls around and the song's all over the airwaves (and your stereo), the promised RH&MS EP will be ready. In the meantime, download the song for free below.
(And here's a video...)
Share: "Grand Old Flag" - The Boogers
It's the Fourth of July, and hot as blazes around here, so it's a good thing that The Boogers' free mp3 for the holiday clocks in at a shade under 30 seconds. Because if their cover of "Grand Old Flag" were any longer, the undeniable urge to pogo up and down to the track could cause heat exhaustion if your kids aren't properly prepared.
To download the track, head to The Boogers' home page and click on the cute kid in the upper-right hand corner.
